Raspberry Pi + SSD hat is an awesome DIY project for tinkerers. But it requires Linux knowledge, terminal commands, manual software setup, and ongoing maintenance. Plum Box is designed for people who don't want to deal with any of that — no terminal, no config files, no Linux. Just plug in and go. The base Plum Box unit does not include an SSD — you can use any M.2 NVMe SSD you already own or purchase one separately. This is by design. Plum Box's core use case is automatic phone backup and remote access — both work perfectly over WiFi. Adding an Ethernet port would add complexity and cost without benefiting our target users. We want to keep the experience as simple as possible: one USB-C cable for power, WiFi for connectivity. That said, we're listening to feedback and considering Ethernet for future products.

No. Your data is stored locally on your SSD inside your Plum Box, in your home. We have zero access to your files. That's the whole point — you own your data completely.

The only information we store on our servers is your email address, solely for service announcements and important updates. Everything else — your password, two-factor authentication, and all user credentials — is stored and processed entirely on your Plum Box inside your home. Your account lives on your device, not on our servers.

Your data is on the SSD inside. If the device is damaged, you can remove the SSD and access your files from another device. We recommend keeping important files backed up in more than one location, just like with any storage device. AES-256 encryption protects your data if the device is stolen.

Our CEO has a background in electrical engineering, and our team has experience in embedded systems, federated learning, and product design.
